John Roe

Consulting Psychologist

John E. Roe, Ph.D is a senior consultant in The Discovery Group, a group of professional consultants founded in 1994, that provides consulting, coaching, mediation, training, and succession planning.  The Discovery Group focuses on helping clients develop the personal and interpersonal competencies that produce measurable results in workplace performance. 

Dr. Roe’s professional education and experience span more than 30 years, including United States Air Force Officer Training School, Undergraduate Pilot Training, and professional education in management, business, and Aviation Psychology.  John received his B.A. in Psychology from California State University Northridge in 1968, an M.A. in Secondary Education from Chapman University in 1972, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology in 1973, and his Ph.D. in Psychology in 1977 from Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University.  In 1990, John completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Behavioral Health Psychology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.  In 1978 he started a private practice in Santa Cruz, California and soon thereafter established Relational Resources, Inc., a non-profit corporation offering a variety of human services in the greater Santa Cruz County area.  In 1990, while completing his last two years as Chief of Mental Health at Mather Air Force Base, he resumed his private psychotherapy practice in El Dorado County with Discovery Center. 

John is a certified consultant and a Master Trainer in workplace mediation.  He has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education, including specialized training in consulting to partners, couples, and families in business, in personal coaching, in the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and The Conflict Dynamics Profile in consulting and training.  He is a trained parent educator and is the co-author of The Ten Suggestions® for Parents of Teen© and author of A Consumer’s Guide to Christian Counseling©.  His current focus is his consulting work with Business Partnerships and Family Businesses, and he is passionate about developing leadership and facilitating closely-held business success and succession.

Barbara Thompson

Consultant, Mediator, and Trainer

Barbara Thompson is a senior consultant in The Discovery Group, a group of professional consultants founded in 1994, that provides consulting, coaching, mediation, training, and succession planning.  The Discovery Group focuses on helping clients develop the personal and interpersonal competencies that produce measurable results in workplace performance.

Ms. Thompson’s professional training and experience span more than 30 years, including training as a psychologist, a master's degree in psychology, and continuing education in business, management, and psychology.  Barbara received her B.A. in Psychology from Biola University in 1971 and her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Western Seminary in 1981.  In 1986, Barbara founded Discovery Psychotherapy Center, a multi-disciplinary counseling center in Cameron Park, which provides individual, group, family, and marital counseling. 

Barbara is a certified consultant and a Master Trainer in workplace mediation.  She has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education, including specialized training in consulting to partners, couples, and families in business, personal coaching, and the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, The Conflict Dynamics Profile, and the Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile in consulting and training. 

Ms. Thompson has additional training in workplace violence prevention and corporate crisis intervention.  She has experience in critical incident stress management and forming and directing crisis management teams for handling dangerous employee incidents in the workplace.  She has provided numerous on-site grief and crisis debriefings in the workplace and has, along with her colleagues, assisted management teams in handling such events that threaten employees' safety and disrupt workflow.

Barbara’s current focus is her consulting work with Business Partnerships and Family Businesses, and she is passionate about facilitating closely-held business success and succession.
